Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. She left the institution she was in just two years later in pursuit of a career as an actor. Her journey was not without obstacles. her path to success. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot in a crime magazine and drama, however no theater opportunities were offered. Then, she worked as a hat check girl at the nightclub before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. She was an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
